Comcast announced it has awarded a $30,000 grant and 80 laptops to Tec Centro Berks in Reading, PA to help advance digital opportunities in the area.

The grant supports Tec Centro Berks’ basic and advanced computer education classes and will help bring digital literacy training to an additional 150 adult students at no cost. The 12-week course is led by digital navigators who equip residents of Berks County with essential digital skills to advance workforce preparedness and combat the challenges of unemployment and underemployment.

“Digital skills open the doors to high-demand career opportunities that provide family-sustaining wages and benefits,” said Violet Emory, Executive Director of Tec Centro Berks. “We are grateful to Comcast for the support and partnership to ensure our students gain the essential training they need to confidently participate in today’s digital society.”

The laptops were donated to recent graduates and current students of Tec Centro Berks programming that teaches digital literacy skills.

“At first, I was scared to take on the journey of learning to navigate a computer system. As a beginner, learning a cloud-based productivity suite felt overwhelming. However, with support, patience, and determination, I did it,” said Adela Rodriguez, Case Manager and former student at Tec Centro Berks. “Tec Centro Berks’ digital literacy class didn’t just teach me skill: it gave me confidence, a career, and a new purpose”

Comcast’s support for Tec Centro Berks is made possible through Project UP, Comcast’s $1 billion comprehensive initiative to advance digital opportunity and help build a future of unlimited possibilities.

“At Comcast, we understand that digital skills are essential for securing good-paying jobs and building a stronger workforce,” said Ricky Frazier Jr., Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Keystone Region. “Our partnership with Tec Centro Berks reflects our commitment to closing the digital divide, and we’re proud to work together to create real opportunities and lasting impact in the Reading community.”
