Comcast’s Hispanic Heritage Month activities had something for everyone: fun, food and professional development. Comcast’s Unidos Employee Resource Group planned activities throughout the month and across the region, creating opportunities for employees to learn more about the contributions and traditions that Latinos have brought to the United States. Activities included:
- Spanish-language music and movie screenings
- Taco truck visits to call centers in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg
- Weekly internal podcasts about food, music, movies and Latino professionals
- Potluck lunches featuring foods from different countries
Professional development programs in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg featured visits by Luz Colon, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Commission on Latino Affairs and Luis Cruz, a photojournalist with WHTM who discussed diversity in the workplace as well as stories about their career paths. Luz also gave Unidos members an update on work that the Pennsylvania Commission on Latino Affairs has done during 2018 on behalf of Governor Wolf to assist families from Puerto Rico who have relocated to Pennsylvania following Hurricane Maria. Unidos collected more than 140 backpacks and provided school supplies for relocating families served by the Latino Hispanic American Community Center.
Hispanic Heritage Month culminated with Latino Connection honoring Comcast’s Unidos Lead Maria Medina at 100: Pennsylvania’s Most Influential Latino Leaders for her work in the community. “I am humbled that my passion to be involved in the community and my Comcast career have led me to be a part of the Inaugural Class of the 100 Most Powerful Latino Leaders in Pennsylvania,” said Medina. “To be among such a prestigious circle of men and women, is truly an honor. I hope that this will inspire others to take risks, knock on new doors, and always remember to give back.”
